The Objectives of Digital Britain Report Criticised as Insufficient
The suggestion of the Digital Britain report to provide broadband connections of 2Mb all over the country which has been enthusiastically accepted by the Government has been deemed insufficient. The ‘Mind the Gap – Digital England, a rural perspective’ report criticises the government’s plans on the ground that there has been no broadband infrastructure development for rural parts.
The report, which has been brought to the public by CRC (the Commission for Rural Communities), criticises the Digital Britain report by saying that the aim of 2Mb speed broadband connections all over the country is not sufficient. Spokesman of CRC warned the people against limiting their focus to the 2MB objective. The report recommends targeted steps to ensure that broadband is available in rural parts as well.
One of the steps which have been suggested in the report is provision for community-based schemes in the rural areas. Community broadband schemes have become popular already and the Independent Networks Co-operative Association has 40 such schemes from different parts of the country under its aegis.
The Digital Britain report has also been criticised for broadband levy of 50p per month which it plans to impose on users for broadband infrastructure development. The CRC report has questioned the adequacy of this mode of financing.
