Good leaders are highly in demand in the workplace, in schools, and in other venues that promote group activities or action. Although some people believe that good leaders are born, this is, needless to say, not a universally accepted truth. Though there are people who are born with certain characteristics and qualities that make them a potential good leader, there are also those whose leadership skills were developed through years of patient practice and experience. Indeed, anyone can be a good leader if he is committed. A good leader does not have to be a class valedictorian. If a person possesses good communication skills, he can potentially be an excellent leader. Bear in mind that effective communication is a two-way process. Interaction must be present. Effective communication will also help the leader understand the needs and characteristics of each team member. Thus, he is able to build a foundation for trust and respect. A person who follows a set of guiding principles will also make a good leader. He must have a clear idea or vision of what his team needs to achieve. To be able to do this, the leader must be able to come up with an effective strategy that involves teamwork. Being a leader does not mean taking all the responsibility; rather, it involves a sharing of knowledge and skills. For the leader, listening to his team members is just as important as talking to them. Finally, an effective leader is one who is able to inspire and motivate his team to work toward a goal. A leader who works to impress other people will not be successful in achieving anything worthy.
